With more than 2,800 people per square mile, Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Since the early 1990s, the country’s economy has grown steadily and the country recorded nearly 7.1 percent growth in 2016. It has also made considerable progress in reducing income poverty, getting nearly all girls and boys enrolled in primary schools, and reducing child and maternal mortality. However nearly 24 percent of the total population, still live under the poverty line in Bangladesh. According to GHI 2017, 36.1 percent of children under five years in the country are stunted, while 14.3 percent are wasted. 37.6 children per 1000 live births die before the age of five (UNDP, HDR 2016).

Also, Bangladesh is recognized as one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change. Two-thirds of its territory is less than 5 metres above sea level. Annually thousands of households lose their homes, land, crops and livelihood as a result of natural disasters triggered by rainfall, rising sea levels, and tropical cyclones. The country’s population at risk of sea level rise is predicted to grow to 27 million by 2050 (IPCC).
